Golden State sends off Jordan Poole, acquires Chris Paul

The Golden State Warriors are putting everything on the line to win a championship.

"According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Golden State is acquiring Chris Paul (guard, 183 cm, 79 kg) in a trade with the Washington Wizards.

In exchange for Paul, Golden State is sending Jordan Poole (guard, 193 cm, 88 kg), Ryan Hollins (guard, 191 cm, 82 kg), a 2030 first-rounder (with a protected 20th pick), and a 2027 second-rounder.

# Trade Overview

Dubs get Chris Paul

Wizards get Jordan Poole, Ryan Hollins, 2030 first-rounder (protecting the 20th pick), 2027 second-rounder

Why the Warriors.

Golden State got Paul and no one else. They brought in a player who had a reputation as one of the best point guards in the game, but has faltered this season. They got Paul to play alongside Steph Curry. On the flip side, Paul will have to accept a bench role. He could be a starter, but his defense isn't the same as it was in his prime, and it's important to see how he fits into Golden State's offense.

Instead of bringing back Paul, they sent out Poole. He clashed with Draymond Green in the buildup to last season, and now he's at a crossroads. The fact that Golden State brought Paul back means that both Paul and Poole are worth less in the marketplace than they were a year ago due to their poor playoff performances.

With Green expected to re-sign, Golden State decided to shed Poole's contract. Even before the trade, their combined payroll for the upcoming 2023-2024 season was over $200 million. Last season's total also topped $190 million, but this time it's a different story. That's because the labor agreement signed this spring has placed new constraints on the big-spending team.

With the addition of a second apron, Golden State's financial management became even more challenging. Nevertheless, they decided to be more aggressive in their championship pursuits. In fact, it gave them the opportunity to dispose of the pool. They traded Poole's long-term contract, which was up for renewal next season, for Paul's short-term deal. Paul will make $30.8 million next season, but his salary for the 2024-2025 season is not guaranteed.

For now, it's not a huge increase in spending. They also made the trade because they might not have Paul after next season. It doesn't change the amount of money we spend next season, but it could be lower after next season. If they're happy with Paul's performance, they can keep him, and if they're not, they can part ways. 메이저사이트

Paul started 59 games for Phoenix last season. In 32 minutes per game, he posted 13.9 points (.440 .375 .831), 4.3 rebounds, 8.9 assists, and 1.5 steals. It was the fourth consecutive season in which his scoring average dropped, beginning with the 2019-2020 season. He remained solid in his late 30s, but averaged just 12.4 points in 35.7 minutes in seven games in the playoffs and couldn't avoid a trade.

Golden State is expected to bring Paul off the bench. Golden State has a solid frontcourt of Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson behind Curry and Green, 메이저사이트주소 which means Paul will be coming off the bench for the first time in his NBA career. He'll be playing on Curry's team, the same team that consistently competed with him in the 2010s, and he'll have to back him up.

Why the Wizards?

After sending Bradley Beal to Phoenix, Washington made another meaningful trade. They didn't get a full first-round pick in Beal, but they did get four first-rounders and a first-rounder in Polo. Not only that, but they got Poole, who can serve as an immediate starter, and set the stage for a rebuild.

Poole is a talent that can lead the offense. There are question marks on defense, but expect him to play a bigger role in a rebuilding Washington. The Wizards sent Kristaps Porzingis to Boston and brought back Tyreese Jones, giving them a deep backcourt. Even if Poole is only a shadow of his regular-season self, he'll be successful.

Poole started 82 games for Golden State last season, 43 of them as a starter. He averaged 20.4 points (.430 .336 .870), 2.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in 30 minutes. He's gotten better every year since entering the NBA. Last season, he averaged 20 points for the first time in his career despite bouncing between the starting lineup and the bench.

However, unlike the previous year, his value plummeted as he struggled in the playoffs. What's more, his contract extension (four years, $128 million) kicks in next season, and he'll be making about $28.7 million next season alone. In sending Paul away, Washington gets a leading scorer who will be with them for at least four seasons. Now in his early-to-mid-20s, he's a primary rebuilding piece.

Add Hollins to the mix, as he reached the big leagues via the 2022 draft. He was selected by Golden State with the 14th pick in the second round. In 12 games last season, he averaged 1.9 points (.350 .333 1.000) and one rebound in 5.2 minutes per game. He's now in his 20s. Expect him to get some more opportunities in Washington. His contract is guaranteed through next season, and his salary for the 2024-2025 season is not guaranteed.

Hollins is expected to play behind Jones and Monte Morris. Washington ultimately shed Beal and Porzingis' contracts and received Pool and multiple expiring contracts (Gallinari, Muscala). In addition, Hollins can opt out of his contract after next season. They've cleared a lot of salary cap space and set themselves up nicely for the future.
